Hi Lilly! I hope your 2024 is off to a fantastic start. Have you set any New Year’s
resolutions?
Hello! I have indeed. The most important one is that by next year I want to be able to produce my music fully. Then there are a few general ones like I want a better sleep/wake
routine, healthier eating, and I want to be in nature more and do more fun activities/
traveling.
Can you share some insights into how your musical style has evolved from neo-folk/
pop to dance music?
When Sonny Fodera released ‘The Moment’ I sang and co-wrote, I didn’t know
anything about dance music, but it opened up the door to another world that I
fell in love with. I love writing catchy hooks and dark/ambiguous lyrics and I feel like dance
music is the perfect place to be for that. It was a very natural transition for me to start
writing my dance tracks because it was mostly what I was doing anyway!
What was it like collaborating with Sonny Fodera on tracks like ‘The Moment’ and
‘Closer’? How did those opportunities come about?
It was very cool. ‘The Moment’ was originally written as a slower pop song, then Sonny
heard it through mutual friends, he loved the message of the song, and turned it into a
house banger. With ‘Closer’ it was a bit different as the song was already written, and they
had a few people vocal it including me, and decided that my version felt the best!
With your experience in various countries, how do you find the music scenes differ
between places like the UK, Australia, Sweden, Italy, and Norway?
The main differences I’ve found are that Scandinavia is mainly all about pop music, and
they are the kings and queens of it, they have the code cracked and are just insanely good
and writing pop songs. Australia is very focused on the chill singer/songwriter and indie/folk
music, probably because they are all so laid back over there! The UK is a bit more diverse, but
dance music is a big thing here compared to other places. I think I bring a bit of the
pop and the indie folk into the dance music I make now which is fun as both sounds have
shaped me!
Your track ‘Hit The Ground’ showcases your progress as an artist. Can you tell us
more about the creative process behind this song?
I wrote this song over Zoom with Rory O’Hare and Gamuel Sori. Rory sent over some piano
chords that I fell in love with and I pretty much immediately heard the main hook “Do I lose
you now, or do I wait till we hit the ground” – so the track was very easily written which is
how I think it should be. I went in later and changed some lyrics to make it a bit more “me”
and I also added some guitar to add an organic touch to it. Nathan C hopped on later in the
process and just took it to the next level by adding some layers to the production that made
it super emotional – very dark in places and very uplifting and hopeful in other places!
How do you balance the demands of songwriting, singing, and playing multiple
instruments when working on new music?
It does get really busy sometimes. I feel like there is always something I can, and should be
doing – especially now that I’m also learning to produce. If I have some free time I want to
put that towards working on my production so that it can get a bit crazy. I do feel like I’m good at taking proper breaks now and then though and I go back to Sweden quite a lot to visit
my family and have a breather. I know my limit and I know when I need a break because my
creativity takes a massive hit.
What were the biggest challenges you have faced in the music industry?
The biggest and most constant challenge which I work on every day, is living without
financial security. The music industry is very complicated and money comes and goes. I think
it’s important to stay in the moment and not worry too much about the future and I just
need to keep reminding myself that everything will work out!
Do you have a particular song or project that holds special meaning to you? If so,
why?
There are a couple of songs I’ve put out that are a bit more special to me in different ways.
For example, I got asked to write a song for a documentary about the extinction of Orca
Whales, and they asked me to write a song about the ocean. My best experiences by the sea
have been out at my parent’s summer house in Sweden, so I drew my inspiration from there
and now when I listen to that song it takes me back to the summer house which is
special because my parents don’t own that place anymore.
Another special song to me is ‘Moonlight’ because I’m just so proud of how well it’s done. I
released it as an independent artist, and that song was the song that made me able to do
music full-time.
I could keep going on and mention why other songs are special to me but I could probably
find something special about almost all my songs as I pretty much love them all for different
reasons!
What are your plans for the future? Are there any upcoming music or tours that your
fans can look forward to it?
The main goal for the short-term future is to release as much music as possible, and I have a
few songs lined up. There will be lots of features and co-writes coming out this year too
which I’m excited about. I’m at a point where I’m just trying to build and get a lot of music
out there at the moment, so I think shows will come a little further down the line.
