Interview with Mitch Oliver:
Hey Mitch, thanks for taking the time to join us today. How have you been?
It’s been absolutely rejuvenating! Just landed back from the vibrant energy of South America and straight into the refreshing vibes of spring here in Montreal. It’s the perfect time to be home.
You’ve just come back from your tour of South America, tell us about some of the highlights!
Definitely, it was a series of unforgettable experiences. The energy of the crowds in South America is simply electrifying. They bring such passion and deep musical knowledge to each show, which makes every performance feel special. Highlights? The shows in Jujuy and Tucuman were absolutely electric, with the crowd’s connection just off the charts.
How do you feel the Latin American crowds differ from those in the US and Europe?
There’s something unique about Latin American audiences. Their enthusiasm is infectious, and deeply embedded in their vibrant culture, which resonates strongly with how they live and breathe electronic music. They’re not just fans; they’re informed enthusiasts who dive deep into artists’ works long before the shows. Their loyalty and warmth are both humbling and inspiring.
Do you have a favorite venue in Argentina to perform at?
Picking a favorite venue is tough because I’ve rocked so many incredible places across Argentina, mostly at outdoor festival setups that are just out of this world. But if I had to choose one from the club scene, it has to be Crobar in Buenos Aires. There’s something about Crobar—it’s not just a club, it’s an experience! The vibe there is electric, the crowd is always on fire, and the energy is just unmatched. It’s definitely a special place for any performer!
Aside from your performances, what did you do to immerse yourself in the local cultures?
While performing was a thrill, diving into the local culture was just as enriching. I practically lived for the local cuisine—empanadas every day, mouth-watering asados with both old and new friends, and became quite the mate aficionado! It’s amazing how their somewhat different lifestyle schedule brought me closer to becoming an honorary Argentine. The biggest takeaway, though, was learning to embrace a less stressful life, cherishing the small, beautiful moments. Spending hours just chatting about life with friends, phone-free and fully present, was incredibly refreshing and truly inspiring. In today’s fast-paced world, their approach to life brought me a sense of peace and hope.
Let’s also touch on your debut set at Igloofest. Do you have any interesting stories to tell us about the festival?
Igloofest was a riot! Despite the frigid temperatures, the energy was absolutely electric. It’s one of those events that just pumps adrenaline straight into your veins, making every second on stage unforgettable. The crowd’s enthusiasm, even in the cold, really pushes you to give it your all and then some.
Something that’s often not talked about enough is the difficulty in kickstarting a successful career in this industry. What are some of the challenges you’ve faced over the past few years?
Starting a successful career in this industry is definitely not easy, and it’s a topic that deserves more discussion. One of the biggest misconceptions is that you can achieve everything on your own and be extremely successful. However, it’s crucial to surround yourself with people you trust and who complement your skills to help you grow. It’s also important not to be afraid to ask for help and to be open to learning at every stage. The industry is evolving rapidly, and especially in recent years, staying up-to-date and finding ways to reinvent yourself have become significant challenges
How has your sound evolved over the years, and what influences have shaped your current musical style?
My journey as a DJ has always been about versatility and continual evolution. Initially, I was deeply into producing Organic House, which truly resonated with me and came from the heart. However, I craved more dynamism for my live performances. I thrive on playing my own creations, tailoring my sets with a diverse arsenal of musical styles to suit the vibe of each moment. Over time, I’ve fine-tuned my studio work to capture this energy better. Now, I’m super excited to have a robust discography that not only rocks the main stages at massive festivals with high-energy tracks but also includes smoother grooves that appeal to the fans of deeper, more sophisticated sounds.
Collaborations can lead to some of the most creative tracks in the music industry. Are there any artists you’ve recently worked with or wish to collaborate with in the future?
Collaborations are the spice of my musical life right now! Working with SINCA, who’s on a serious hot streak, and gearing up for a release with Tyler Mesa has been incredibly exciting. The creative synergy that comes from working with others is just unparalleled. I’ve got my eye on a few other artists for future collabs, and I can’t wait to see what we can create together.
In an era dominated by streaming and social media, what strategies have you employed to stand out and maintain a strong digital presence?
Consistency is my anchor in maintaining a strong digital presence. Rather than chasing algorithms or trends, I focus on delivering quality content that truly represents who I am and the funky, energetic vibe I want to share. Building a strong, authentic brand has been key to standing out in a crowded digital landscape.
How important is it for a budding artist to have the right team in place?
Having the right team is crucial for any budding artist. It frees you up to focus on what you love most—creating music—while sharing the emotional highs and lows with people who get what you’re going through. More than just having skilled people, it’s about trust and shared values, which lets you express yourself creatively and personally.
How involved are you in the day to day running of your brand with the team?
I’m hands-on with my brand every day, but I’m shifting more towards the creative side and stepping back from the admin details. This shift allows my creative juices to flow even better, pushing my ideas further every day.
What advice would you give to those who might be looking to start their own musical careers?
For those starting out in music, remember—patience is key. Surround yourself with believers, never hesitate to seek help, and always stay true to your vision. Authenticity outlasts trends every time, so stick to what’s true to you, and you’ll find your path.
