Interview with SYREETA

Hello SYREETA, how is your life going at the moment and how are you enjoying the summer?

Hey Hey, I’m really well thank you.  Summer has got off to a great start, I’ve traveled to some amazing places, from Dubai to NYC, Ibiza to Glastonbury… Sharing the stage with icons such as Black Coffee, Carl Cox, Kerri Chandler & Skepta. I haven’t stopped smiling and feeling very grateful, and it’s not over yet.

How does it feel to be a key resident at HE.SHE.THEY in Amnesia Ibiza alongside such legendary names like Ewan McVicar, Marcel Dettmann, Ben Klock, and Horse Meat Disco?

Knowing that you’re part of something that celebrates you for being you no matter what, makes you feel seen, and that’s one of the many reasons I love being a resident. Their inclusive and diverse lineups, means you get to share the stages with many well-respected artists in the game, gain new experiences, and push boundaries.

Can you share with us the journey that led you to become a resident DJ at one of the most iconic clubs in the world?

I had been following HE.SHE.THEY’S journey a few months after their 1st show at MInistry of Sound, after reading up on their ethos, and seeing the most fun & wild videos, I knew it was something I wanted to be a part of. I went to IMS in 2019 and was introduced to Steven Braines. We chatted for around 40 mins and I knew that we were aligned. He invited me to their 1st birthday at Fabric that wknd, and I couldn’t wait to experience a HE.SHE.THEY party, and it did not disappoint. A few months later I was invited to play their Brighton Pride party, I continued to play for their parties and after a couple of years, I was asked to become a resident. I have been able to play at some of the best clubs in the world with HE.SHE.THEY and the brand is just getting bigger and better.

HE.SHE.THEY is known for its inclusive and boundary-pushing ethos. How do you feel this aligns with your personal and musical values?

Authenticity, Inclusive, and diversity are core values to me both personally and musically. So it automatically aligns.

Being a black queer female, I want to show aspiring artists who are like me, that you can be seen, and your goals are obtainable by being your authentic self, and not having to compromise.

What can the audience expect from your sets at HE.SHE.THEY this season? Are there any special surprises or unique elements you plan?

Genre blending, high energy and super fun… I get to play raw and unfiltered. The performers and dancers are what help to bring that special He.She.They vibe so when I’m digging for tracks, I’m not just thinking of the audience but also the performers, I make sure I have lots of tracks with attitude where the dancers get to “werk it” to. I also have lots of acapellas which I like to lay over tracks to create a totally unique experience.

Ibiza has a rich history in the dance music scene. How do you think the island’s culture and vibe influence your performances?

Ibiza has always been a place of self-expression,  somewhere you can forget all your troubles, you get to have freedom of expression and it’s definitely somewhere to take risks, as it’s a very free-spirited island, and the people that go there understand its culture. The magic and emotions you feel when you’re there are unmatched.

What advice would you give to aspiring DJs who dream of playing at iconic venues like Amnesia?

Before I ever DJ’d on the island, I  would go to Amnesia to party with my friends, we would spend all night on the dance floor  – I used to visualize myself with these same friends behind the booth playing records to people and eventually with hard work and self-belief it came true.  So my advice is, if your dreams don’t scare you, they aren’t big enough! Dream big, believe in yourself, put in the work, and make it happen.

Looking forward, what are your plans for the summer?  Are there any upcoming projects or collaborations we should look out for?

This summer has already started so well! It’s been a lot of fun! August I have a totally packed schedule, in August  I’ll be in Ibiza 3 times to play at Paradise Amnesia, Hi and Ushuaia, I’ll be in Ireland with Carl Cox Cox, Amsterdam,  Zurich, also a couple of UK shows,   my summer will end with a few shows in the USA, including ARC in Chicago, which I’m really looking forward to.  Between gigs I’m in the studio, I’m and I have a few very exciting collaborations which I  cannot wait to share! We are only just getting started!
