Mark Wilkinson, professionally known as Wilkinson, is a highly regarded British drum and bass music producer and DJ from London. With his music featured on labels such as RAM Records, Hospital Records, and Virgin EMI, Wilkinson has become a prominent name in the electronic music scene. His track “Afterglow,” featuring uncredited vocals by Becky Hill, became a massive hit, reaching number 8 on the UK Singles Chart in October 2013. This was a pivotal moment in his career, coinciding with the release of his debut album, Lazers Not Included, on October 28, 2013.
During the first weekend of November, Wilkinson performed at Prague’s iconic Roxy club, delivering an electrifying set. Amidst his busy schedule, he graciously gave us a moment for a quick interview, sharing insights into his career, creative process, and plans for the future.
Interview with Wilkinson
Tonight, we’re here with Wilkinson at the Roxy Club, gearing up for a short interview. First of all, how are you feeling before your performance?
It’s great to be back. I think it’s been about eight years since I played here at the Roxy. We did a live show, which was incredible. I’ve always loved this club, and I’ve wanted to return for a long time. We’ve played so many festivals and different venues, but it’s exciting to be back here. I’m really looking forward to tonight.
So, how many times have you performed here in Prague, do you remember?
Wow, I must have performed here around 15 or 20 times. I usually come about twice a year. We do Let It Roll almost every year, and then maybe one or two club shows as well. Prague has definitely been one of the European cities I visit most often, and I absolutely love it here. The love for drum and bass is incredible, and it’s amazing to be a part of it and keep coming back.

Could you tell us what or who inspired you to start in the music industry?
For me, it was definitely Andy C in the early days. His work with vinyl was a huge inspiration. He was always killing it, and I really looked up to him. That was a big driving force for me.
I’ve read a few articles about you, and it’s mentioned that you’re quite an “adventure freak.” What sports do you enjoy the most?
Well, I grew up mountain biking and BMXing. BMX was my first love—doing dirt jumps and just being outdoors. I’ve always been into bikes, and I still am. I used to BMX and make drum and bass—that’s what I did. Now, I’ve gotten into mountain biking a bit more, especially when I visit New Zealand. It’s all about being outside, in the fresh air, away from the studio. I’m definitely an adrenaline junkie, which is probably why I make drum and bass too. The two passions really go hand in hand.
That actually leads me to another question. You mentioned being inspired by New Zealand and moving to the countryside. What is it about the countryside that you love, and does it influence your music?
The countryside offers a different pace compared to the city life and touring. As DJs, we’re constantly on the move, traveling through cities, flying all the time, and being in dark studios for hours. I wanted to have a space where I could unwind, and being out in nature does wonders for me. If I get stuck on a track, I just step outside and take a walk. It calms me down and helps clear my mind. It’s also great for my mental health—having that space to just relax and reconnect with nature. It helps me get back into the studio with a fresh perspective.
Have you named the chickens yet?
Oh, we don’t really name the animals. We have sheep on the land, but they come and go, and things happen to them, so I try not to get too attached. A local farmer looks after them, and I get to enjoy seeing them around, plus they help keep the grass mowed. We have plenty of wildlife, and I love it. But, yeah, no names for the sheep!
What’s next for you? Any upcoming events or something you’d like to invite your fans to?
I’m always gigging, but I do have a show in London at Alternet that’s already sold out, so unfortunately, I can’t invite anyone to that. But I’m really excited about the new music I’m working on. I’ve got a new single out called Shine On which was an amazing collaboration. Next year is going to be huge—I’ve got tons of new music coming, some incredible collaborations, and I’ll be releasing new tracks every couple of months. I’m really looking forward to it!
Any final thoughts you’d like to share with your fans and the readers?
Just live life to the fullest because we’re only here for a short time. Be kind to one another, and have as much fun as you can along the way.
